One Word Essay

HEROES

Everyone has their own hero which they look up to at any one point in the lives, who is yours? Is it Superman? Or is it Batman? Or.. is it someone else entirely? Heroes do not necessarily have to originate from comic books. They can be both real and imaginary, but in the end, they are something we look up to, who present us hope and fuel us with powerful dreams. Most importantly, they give us something to believe it.

Our parents may be the first people we define as heroes, even though we ourselves may not be aware of it. They are the people we learn to communicate with from the start, it would be no surprise that we would learn to trust them and love them easily, and with our young minds just beginning to sprout, we probably would see them as godly figures that deserved thrones for all the attention and care they showered us with. Our mother and father may also seem like knowledgeable guiders down the path of life as we take our early steps when we are toddlers, they hold onto our small, baby skinned hands so firmly and tightly, we would never once think that they would let go. In this sense, our parents shine a reliable light, and we cannot resist looking up to them. We may have this thought in mind – When I grow up; I want to be just like Father (or Mother)!

When the time comes for us to leave our parents’ warm arms and journey into the next part of our life, school, we will meet yet another kind of person that seems to emit a heroic aura. Our teachers, ranging from kindergarten all the way to University may differ in personality and teaching methods; however, they all share the same goal of teaching and instilling in us morals. Since young, our teachers already leave a large impact on us in primary school – thought more developed, our minds have yet to be fully matured – the teachers come off as people who can answer any question you are unsure of, and any question that is thrown at them. This will probably amaze and leave a lot of young children in awe. Teachers also give off a commanding and leadership-like quality, as they tend to be able to tame and handle misbehaving individuals in class with swift action. If one meets up with any problems in school, the first person they would think to approach would be a teacher, why? Because it just seemed like the most logical thing to do.

When we return home, there is someone else we can turn to for help when our parents are not the ones who we want to bother. Our older sister or brother may comfort us in times of need, and can afford to lend a listening ear when it’s just one of those days where you just can’t get along with your parents. Our elder siblings tend to set expectation for us to follow. Whether it is academic or physical achievement which causes celebration in the family, an older sibling sets the standard at which your parents and yourself will tend to aim for your results when the time comes for you to enter secondary school or graduate from college. They seem like powerful and capable talents of the family, that you cannot help but think of them as heroes. As role models. You cannot help but wish to follow their footsteps.

Heroes. They do not need to possess lazer vision, flight or super strength to be able to save you from danger and provide you with hope. You just need to believe in them.
