Argumentative Essay

cute, huh? (:

Computer Gaming Addiction

In recent years, Singapore’s youths have been increasingly beginning to indulge themselves in online computer games and visiting Local Area Network shops to partake in such activities. Teenagers nowadays can hardly stay away from the glowing computer screen. These young minds find it enjoyable and recreational to play these online games, but some of them may suffer from addiction unknowingly.

Firstly, these teenagers may find it pleasing to be able to mould themselves into their own personalized character in these games. To be given the power to slay monsters and rescue damsels in distress, much like a hero in those fantasy movies. However, as much as they might find it enjoyable to be able to take on such roles, these actions illustrate how the youths are trying to escape reality. This should not be the case. Fleeing into a world of make believe in order to forget about one’s responsibilities in everyday life would definitely cause a problem. The virtual world can never be a substitute over the real world.

Secondly, computer game addiction may occur due to the fact that the students have “nothing better to do”, hence, they log online and decide to join in the online games that everyone has been talking so much about, so as to entertain themselves. However, overtime, this develops into a bad habit and a form of addiction, since it becomes part of their daily routine. Teenagers should not build such bad habits, they should instead concentrate on their studies and on more constructive things. Though it may be fine to play the computer sometimes, too much of anything, is always bad.

Finally, I would like to end off by saying that there are many other things that can be done when one is free. Participating in team sports, learning how to play a musical instrument and studying are just the tip of the iceberg. Playing the computer is only just one of them, so we should try to commit ourselves to more healthy and meaningful activities.
